35 years of trout magic celebrated in Arkansas Wildlife Magazine

LITTLE ROCK — The May/June issue of Arkansas Wildlife, the official magazine of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, includes an article about a truly magical place: “Tight against the massive Norfork National Fish Hatchery near Norfork Dam and just under a mile long, Dry Run Creek in Baxter County has been called the crown jewel of the state’s trout fisheries.”

Water from the hatchery creates an ideal situation for anglers under 16 and those who are mobility impaired to land trophy-size cutthroat, rainbow, brook and brown trout. Guest writer Clay Henry, who sports fans may remember as the longtime publisher and editor of Hawgs Illustrated, covers all the angles of how the project started 35 years ago to its impact on anglers from around the world.

The article also includes thoughts from four anglers who fished Dry Run Creek as youngsters and have carried their passion for fishing into adulthood.

The May/June issue celebrates the 50th anniversary of Arkansas Fly Fishers, a group that has grown into much more than a few anglers tying flies and fishing on weekends. Check out a long list of accomplishments and the group’s educational and support efforts.

Read about PRADCO Outdoor Brands, which probably makes most of the lures in your tackle box. The Fort Smith company recently honored Bill Jarboe, a lure designer and engineer with 53 years of PRADCO experience, by naming a fishing pavilion at Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center after his family. PRADCO also pitched in $150,000 to get the ball rolling on a fund drive to update exhibits at the nature center.

The issue holds more – the results of the annual Archery in the Schools State Championships, an article about the successful youth turkey hunt and news of the first woman to win the National Wild Turkey Federation’s National Wildlife Officer of the Year award (hint: she’s Game Warden First Class Audrey Bush of the AGFC).

It’s always a good time to subscribe to Arkansas Wildlife, the bimonthly magazine produced by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, although this may be the best time of year. The next issue, the July-August issue, of the magazine is the calendar edition, full of information about the Arkansas outdoors such as hunting dates and sunrise/sunset times, and stunning photos of native wildlife.
