Description

The various tracts within the Big Timber Leased Lands WMA provide a diversity of habitat types, including upland pine, upland pine/hardwood mix, upland hardwood, bottomland pine/hardwood mix, and bottomland hardwood.

Hunting Opportunities

Big Timber Leased Lands WMA offers excellent deer, turkey and small game hunting opportunities. Some oxbows, sloughs and beaver impoundments offer good to excellent waterfowl hunting opportunities.

Location

The scattered areas that make up the Big Timber Leased Lands WMA are in various parts of Clark County.

Management Practices

Most of the tracts are managed intensively for pine and/or hardwood sawtimber. Single-tree selection is the predominant harvesting method. Prescribed fire also is used. These timber management practices produce excellent wildlife habitat for most game species.

Ownership

Big Timber Leased Lands WMA is a group of privately owned tracts that are leased annually by the AGFC. Private landowners that participate include The Ross Foundation, Clark Timberlands, Anthony Timberlands and Red River Texarkana (managed by Hancock Forest Management).

Purpose

The WMA was established to provide hunting and other outdoor recreation opportunities in Clark County.

Recreation Other Than Hunting

Rivers, streams, oxbows and sloughs offer excellent fishing opportunities. Big Timber Leased Lands WMA Upland Wildlife Demonstration Area is on Highway 182, 5 miles west of Gurdon. This 2,260-acre area is owned by the Ross Foundation and is intensively managed for upland wildlife species and pine sawtimber production. The endangered red-cockaded woodpecker can be found here as well as healthy deer and turkey populations. One purpose of the area is to demonstrate upland wildlife and timber management to private landowners.

Restaurants and Other Facilities

Restaurants and other facilities are available in Arkadelphia, Gurdon and Prescott.

Safety

As with all WMAs, certain areas can become crowded. All users of the area should practice basic hunter safety. Those users not familiar with the area should carry a map and compass and should let others know where they plan to be hunting and when they plan to return.
