Do you know that world-famous archer Ben Pearson attended the dedication of the dam at Lake Conway July 4, 1951?
Arkansas Wildlife magazine subscribers do because the September-October 2023 issue includes a reprint of an article from Conway’s Log Cabin Democrat that covered that historic event. The story is pertinent today because a massive renovation project began Sept. 1 when a gate on the lake’s dam was opened to start the draining process.
Another article in the September-October issue explains why renovation is crucial and what will happen during the next few years as the lake drains and a new dam and spillway are built.
Those are just two articles in the current issue of Arkansas Wildlife. Jim Harris informs us of a plan to bring outdoor education to city schools, which already is working in North Little Rock. Harris also writes about a project to relocate a rare species of crayfish during a highway project near Pine Bluff.
Have you ever heard of a “mountain boomer?” Subscribers will get to know eastern collared lizards and their special habitat. They’ll also take a look back at Commissioner Bobby Martin’s term and get acquainted with the newest commissioner, Brandon Adams.
Those are just a few highlights of the September-October issue – all the usual columns about cooking, tales from game wardens, outdoor places to visit and news items also are included.
