Squirrel

The gray squirrel and the fox squirrel are abundant throughout most of Arkansas. Gray squirrels are likely to be found in more densely wooded areas, while the larger fox squirrel is more commonly found along the edges of forests and in more open timber.

Squirrel hunting is an accessible sport for both seasoned hunters and beginners. Because complete silence is not necessary for a successful squirrel hunt, it’s an ideal season to introduce kids to hunting.

The squirrel season in Arkansas is open nearly year-round with plenty of public hunting opportunities available. Across the state, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission offers a total of more than 100,000 acres of wildlife management areas to hunt squirrels. Because squirrels are so plentiful in Arkansas, hunters typically have a good shot at filling their vest.
