SPRINGDALE — Women interested in learning more about the outdoors may want to take a look at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Event Calendar for the last weekend of March. The agency’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program will be hosting a multitude of workshops to engage and enjoy new pursuits in Arkansas’s great outdoors.
Workshops are being offered throughout the state, but many spaces are still open in Northwest Arkansas as well as Southwest Arkansas.
Tara Bennett, who coordinates the registrations for the BOW workshops, said some areas tend to fill faster than others, but this spring has seen more open spots than usual in the Northwest portion of the state.
“We’ve had a lot of interest in adding more classes in this portion of the state, so we want to let people know about these vacancies,” Bennet said.
Two classes coordinated by the J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Ozark Highlands Nature Center still have plenty of openings: Dutch oven cooking and Introduction to shotguns. The AGFC’s Ponca Nature Center also has openings for birding experiences as well as a class on making soap from deer tallow.
“We have a few openings in many other locations throughout the state as well,” Bennett said. Southwest Arkansas has archery class openings as well as a neat class on primitive fire-building techniques. Potlatch Cook’s Lake Nature Center in Casscoe even has a jelly-making class to sign-up for. Hunting and fishing are offered in many classes, but there’s much more to the outdoors than that, and we try to offer a little bit of everything.”
